Episode #196 Take An Adventure

Boredom is a choice, and we have the power to choose differently. This week, Dr. Michael Brown and thrill-seeker Greg Dickerson encourage us to be curious, take risks, and have fun.

Show Notes

I ride motorcycles. I’ve gone whitewater rafting, and I can’t swim. I’ve jumped out of an airplane. The next thing that I want to do is scuba dive with sharks.

Three Problems

  • We would rather remain in unsatisfying or uncomfortable situations than take a risk.
  • We often invest more of our energy into being successful than into being fulfilled.
  • We tend to adopt our society’s definition of success without thoughtfully considering what it is that we really want.

Five Principles

  • We can never outgrow the importance of play.
  • We don’t need to be thrill-seeking to live a life of excitement and adventure.
  • Failure is not fatal nor final, but is often the pathway to what we most desire.
  • We don’t need to be irresponsible and unreliable in order to live an adventurous life.
  • One of the most personally satisfying things we can do in life is to demonstrate courage in the midst of fear.

Three Practices

  • Learn the name of someone new every single day.
  • Consider the questions, “Am I truly satisfied in life?” and “What choices do I need to make in order to feel fully alive?”
  • Live the type of life that could allow you to look back in your final moments and say, “I really enjoyed myself.”
