Episode #231 Best Of: Focus On Becoming

Life is too short to live on accident. This week, we revisit the first father-son conversation between Dr. Michael Brown and Dr. Justin Brown as they encourage us to live on purpose.

Show Notes

I don’t have to wait until the end of my life to start resembling the person I want to be. I can make choices today, even if I don’t feel like it, to become that very person.
Dr. Justin Brown

Seven Problems

  • We will not be remembered for what we accomplish, achieve, or accumulate.
  • We often answer the question, “Who do you want to be?” incorrectly.
  • We tend to focus on branding and behaving when we should be focused on becoming.
  • If we don’t decide who to become, we could become someone else on accident.
  • Who we are in our 20s is pretty much who we will be for the rest of our lives.
  • We will not wake up one day having become someone we have not been becoming.
  • Our legacy is 100% about our choices and 0% about our intentions.

Five Principles

  • There is a reason we are called human beings instead of human doings.
  • The only thing we can control is our very next choice, and as a result, who we become.
  • It matters less what is actually said at our funerals than what is true about us.
  • It is easier to delay immediate gratification when we have a clear vision for the future.
  • It is never too late to decide who we want to become, but it is best to start early.

Three Practices

  • Write a funeral journal with statements you hope others will say at your funeral.
  • Share parts of your funeral journal with trusted friends who will hold you accountable.
  • Revisit your funeral journal regularly in order to motivate daily decisions.
