Episode #224 Fail More Often

We will never achieve success if we are unwilling to fail on a regular basis. This week, Dr. Michael Brown and budding stand-up comedian Sammy Adebiyi inspire us to accelerate our growth by doing the thing that terrifies us most.

Show Notes

I was terrified because nobody knew me, I’d never done it before, and I didn’t know if I was funny… All I could do was go out and try it.
Sammy Adebiyi

Five Problems

  • The path to success often begins with a trail of failure.

  • Our greatest fears as human beings are death, loneliness, and failure.

  • The fear of failure is often founded upon an unstable sense of identity.

  • Social media convinces us of the lie that success is achieved on the first try.

  • We often equate failing with being a failure.

Five Principles

  • The best mistakes are made fast and early.

  • Our fears are not fatal, and our failures are not final.

  • Every fantastic story is full of failure.

  • Our self-worth is not determined by our accomplishments nor what others think of us.

  • We may not be able to control the outcome, but we can always choose our effort.

Seven Practices

  • Whenever you are tempted to throw in the towel, dig in your heels and try again.

  • Don’t delay your failures, but double-down in order to accomplish your goals sooner.

  • Celebrate your failures with the same energy that you celebrate your successes.

  • Surround yourself with people who encourage you to take risks rather than play it safe.

  • Reframe success with this motto: “To try is to win.”

  • Give your children a reward whenever they try something new.

  • In the next 24 hours, make a choice that really freaks you out.
