Episode #225 Bet On Yourself

When we live with the perspective that we will probably fail, we have already chosen this very outcome. This week, Dr. Michael Brown and endurance sports coach Josh Venis return for a conversation about taking a leap of faith where it matters most.

Show Notes

Last year, I was faced with this fork-in-the-road decision to pursue another 9 to 5 job or to bet on myself and go all in on becoming a full-time coach in endurance sports.

Five Problems

  • Our fear of failure often leads us to play it safe, which increases our risk of failing.

  • If perfection is the goal, it will always feel as if we have failed.

  • We tend to convince ourselves that the pursuit of our goals is actually not worth it.

  • If we wait too long for that perfect moment, we may find that we’ve missed our chance.

  • The choice to delay a decision is in itself a decision, and it’s one we choose too often.

Five Principles

  • The most successful people are those who have failed over and over again.

  • We can make informed and thoughtful decisions even when we aren’t 100% certain.

  • We have the power to do difficult things, and we have what it takes to face our fears.

  • One of the riskiest yet most fulfilling choices in life is to try something new.

  • The person we want to become isn’t built overnight, but it takes years of intentionality.

Five Practices

  • Reframe efforts to achieve your goals in life not as a chase but as a pursuit.

  • Develop the competencies required to someday fulfill your dreams and ambitions.

  • Focus on who you want to become more than you focus on what you want to do.

  • Visit www.veniscoaching.com or @joshuavenis to hire Josh as an endurance coach.

  • Schedule your most important tasks for the time you are most energized and effective.
