Five Problems

  • As we grow in our careers, we will inevitably reach a point when we carry too much.

  • The greatest barriers to passing the baton are fear of losing control and giving up credit.

  • If we try to do everything ourselves, the highest we can achieve is mediocrity.

  • There are many happy families that do not remain happy through later generations.

  • We often prepare wealth for our children without preparing our children for wealth.

Five Principles

  • Our impact can outlast us when someone else continues the impact after we are gone.

  • Delegation is more of a blessing than a burden.

  • We may occasionally discover that others could actually do our job better than we can.

  • The ability to work well with others is one skill that technology can’t replace.

  • Legacy isn’t just lived in the final months of life; we can begin to live our legacy today.

Five Practices

  • Consider, “Am I delaying delegation because of their weaknesses, or mine?”

  • If someone else could do part of your job at least 80% as well, pass it off.

  • Give others the same grace that you gave yourself when you were still learning.

  • Reflect on what you want your family to look like when you are no longer around.

  • Identify a part of your job that you hate, and pass it off to someone who would love it.
