Eight Problems
- We often cheer ourselves on toward our greatest mistakes.
- We tend to be deeply offended by others’ lies but incredibly forgiving of our own.
- The most dangerous lies in life are the private lies we tell ourselves.
- Every lie breeds more lies.
- One of the most common lies we tell ourselves is that we are better off continuing to lie.
- We have so convinced ourselves of lies that we struggle to perceive them as such.
- We can see the solutions to others’ problems far more easily than our own.
- The loudest lies are those that are repeated over and over.
Eight Principles
- The truth will always be revealed.
- Lies grow in the darkness, but secrets shrink in the light.
- If we believe that we are a failure or that we are unlovable, we are believing a lie.
- We have authority over our minds, and lies can only control us with our permission.
- We can believe in ourselves without believing everything we think about ourselves.
- Each time we challenge a lie, it becomes easier to challenge again when it reemerges.
- Challenging our lies is not a one-time event, but it must be repeated every day.
- Ignoring lies is not nearly so effective as replacing lies with truth.
Five Practices
- Consider, “Would I give my best friend the same advice I’m giving myself?”
- Surround yourself with the type of friends who will confidently challenge your lies.
- When a lie has become so loud that it overpowers reality, raise the volume on truth.
- Identify, investigate, and incriminate the lies you believe.
- Get to the root of each lie by asking, “Why do I believe this?”
